Growing my mullet back for Mental Health
Hi my name is Malekai šĀ
Iām growing my mullet for mental health because this cause is really important to me and my family.
Mental health has affected my family for a long time. My mum lost her dad to suicide when she was only 10 years old, and in January 2024 our family lost my grandma also to suicide. Because of this mental health is something we talk about and take seriously in our family.
My aunty Rosie has always been open about her mental health online and through her work. Last year she worked with Jamilla Rizvi to co write the book Broken Brains, which showed me how important it is to speak up and let people know theyāre not alone.
My mullet also means a lot to me. When I was younger, my hair was cut during Domestic Violence. Since then growing my hair has been my pride and joy. Recently I decided to change it up a bit and now Iām rocking a āhorseyā but Iāve chosen to grow my mullet back for this really important cause.
Mullets for Mental Health is about growing a mullet during April to help raise money and start conversations about mental health. People sponsor your mullet, and the money raised goes to theĀ Black Dog Institute which supports mental health research, education and programs for everyone males, females and young people. The mullet is just a fun way to help people talk about serious stuff.
Iām doing this to help raise awareness and support people who might be struggling. If growing my hair can help start conversations or make even one person feel supported, then itās worth it.
Thanks for supporting my mullet, supporting mental health, and putting up with my hair while it grows.

I am so proud of you š„¹ Seeing you choose to grow your mullet back for such an important cause shows the kind, thoughtful person you are. Turning something that means so much to you into a way to help others is really special. And Ninny, even though she hated mullets she would be so proud of you and would definitely approve of growing it back for this reason (even if she pretended not to š) Love you š„°
