Walked in the black dogs' shadow since RAE, it sucks harder than a 2 bit pro. Talking can help - but most don't have signs of depression, they usually are the happiest people you know. (Think Robin Williams etc). Keep in touch with the men in your life, the more they make you laugh - the more you should check on them.
